Guarda Pampa
The ‘guarda pampa’ is a design created by the original cultures of Pampa and Patagonia in South America, derived from symbols that the ancient inhabitants of the Andean regions captured in cave paintings, in which their contours can be guessed.
The oldest indigenous cultures, from the mountain ranges of Mexico to the southern Andes, left paintings that are known as “chained”: an anthropomorphic and cruciform figure, with arms, staggered or not, repeated horizontally and vertically. Forming grids where each figure joins to the next.
Each design, created by a lineage, represented a family coat of arms. Periodically a figure was added to the series initiated by the ancestors, generating a genealogical sequence. Its permanence and continuity gave sustenance in the time and social importance. The growing chain implied that the harmony of the cosmos was respected: events were repeatedly happening and uninterrupted. Life followed its course.
To the east and west of the southern Andes, the chained figures were used for the decoration of ponchos and leather mantles. The presence of these designs in the clothing indicated that the person belonged to an essential and ancient lineage, which was recognised the command and social ascendant.
